How Insurance Agents May Financially Exploit Seniors
Unscrupulous insurance agents, financial advisors and trustees target vulnerable seniors for financial elder abuse. A recently reported California case illustrates what can happen to unsuspecting elderly consumers. According to a complaint filed by an elderly couple in Southern California, an independent insurance agent allegedly sold them an annuity after the couple gave the agent a blank check for what they understood to be a revised trust the agent was preparing. According to allegations in the complaint, the agent used papers the couple provided to transfer $100,000 out of their bank account to purchase the annuity. The agent allegedly earned a $9500 sales commission on the sale. After the sale, the couple was left with only $14,000 in savings according to their complaint against the agent and the issuing carrier. According to the Los Angeles Times, the couple won a jury verdict against the carrier for $3.1 million and the case is now on appeal.
