Imperial County is located in Southern California to the east of the San Diego metropolitan area and shares a border with the Mexican state of Baja California. Due to its location along the Mexican border, over 80% of the county’s population is Hispanic, mostly of Mexican origin. The demographic makeup of the county makes it a rich center of Hispanic heritage and culture. Major natural attractions in the county include the Algodones Sand Dunes, which were featured in the making of the film Return of the Jedi, and the Colorado River, a popular destination for fishing, boating, and swimming. Most of the Salton Sea, California’s largest lake, lies within Imperial County. The largest city in the county is El Centro, although just across the Mexican border is the much larger city of Mexicali, home to over 600,000 residents. The city of Imperial in Imperial County was recognized as the safest city in California in 2016, 2017, and 2018 and the 22nd safest city in the nation.
