Recent Arrest For Abandonment Of 86-Year-Old

Two caregivers at an assisted living and memory care facility have been charged in the death of an 86-year-old Alzheimer’s resident of the facility.[1]  According to the police, the accused caregivers left the 86-year-old patient out in the sun for six hours on a day in June when the temperature was 102.  The dementia sufferer died from heat exposure and dehydration in the heat.  The caregivers have been charged with negligent death of an elder and negligent homicide.  The two caregivers were also charged with forgery for doctoring patient records in order to cover up their actions. Because of the patient’s condition, facility guidelines required her to be checked every hour because she was at risk of falling.  According to police, none of the caregivers checked her one time during the six-hour period that lead to her death from over-exposure to the heat.

Recourse For Injured Residents And Families

It is difficult to see how the family of the patient in this case could have prevented her tragic death.  However, neglect can often be perceived.  Symptoms of abuse or neglect include bed sores/pressure wounds, bruises, weight loss, uncleanliness, excessive drowsiness and sleeping, behavioral changes like withdrawal or silence, confusion, or fear of certain staff members.  If you see any signs whatsoever of abuse or neglect, do something about it.  Seek counsel regarding possible claims your loved one might have against those responsible. Act quickly whenever you suspect any kind of abuse or neglect as the time period to bring suits for these kinds of cases can be very short.  There is no benefit to waiting.  If a loved one has suffered injury as the result of abuse or neglect, our attorneys will pursue all available remedies from owners, administrators and staff.
