Thanks to the recently launched Elder Investment Fraud and Financial Exploitation program, doctors of elders and retirees are now able to help their patients avoid and prevent elder abuse and financial exploitation. Doctors who participate in the program have been trained to ask their elderly patients questions geared to uncover elder investment fraud and financial exploitation. The question topics range from financial decisions to powers of attorney and wills, and if a patient’s answer indicates potential financial elder abuse, financial exploitation, or elder investment fraud, the doctors then make referrals to the patient’s family, Adult Protective services, or other professional care departments.

This program is particularly beneficial to elders and patients who suffer from impaired mental capacity and are at a high risk of elder investment fraud, financial elder abuse and exploitation because of their condition. Many fraudulent perpetrators of financial exploitation target those with impaired mental capacity under the assumption that such diminished capacity will allow their fraud to go undetected. With the help of doctors trained under this new program, elders with impaired mental capacity have new allies in the fight against elder financial exploitation and abuse.
