Reflections on Martin Luther King Day

Why Martin Luther King Day Is Important For Seniors

Today, we celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day in honor of the man who transformed America and gave his life to make this country a better place for all people, regardless of race or creed or sex or wealth or any other distinction. Martin Luther King Day is particularly significant for seniors.  Dr. King himself would have been 91 this year.  The lawyers here at Evans Law Firm fight for justice for all Americans, especially older Americans, and ask that you reach out this holiday to all your older loved ones.

As Dr. King noted, “In the end, we will remember not the words of our enemies, but the silence of our friends.” The elderly often feel forgotten and left behind.  As they age, their world gets smaller, and they hold tight to their closest loved ones.  Life is busy, schedules are chaotic.  But ask any grandma living alone, and she all too well remembers all the days that passed without any visitors and how slowly the clock ticked.  Reach out to any isolated seniors today.  Be present in their lives.  Show them love.

If you’re enjoying the day with your family, ask your older loved ones to share their experiences and thoughts on what has changed in our country and what still needs to be done to make Martin Luther King’s dream a true reality. Inspiring the children and adolescents of today’s America ensures that the civil rights movement lives on and that all injustice in modern day America will one day be abolished once and for all.

As Dr. King wrote:

We must discover the power of love, the power, the redemptive power of love. And when we discover that we will be able to make of this old world a new world.
