Tip #1: Get Your Vision and Hearing Checked Annually

Being able to see and hear well is key when a driver is behind the wheel. After all, 90% of a driver’s reaction time is dependent upon their vision. Make sure your lens prescription is current, as well as your hearing aid, if you have one.

Tip #2: Manage Medications

Listen to your doctor’s advice and read labels carefully when it comes to medications; many medications cause drowsiness or dizziness, and shouldn’t be taken when you plan to drive.

Tip #3: Take a Refresher Course

It’s always a good idea to be up-to-date on driving laws and techniques. When you take a mature driver course, you improve your driving knowledge and make yourself a better driver. Not to mention, you could even get an insurance discount!

Tip #4: Know the Signs

It can be difficult to give up the freedom that comes with driving, but at a certain point, it may be time to hand over your keys. Pay attention to the signs: if you find yourself feeling confused while driving, more flustered, or having issues with your reaction time, these could be red flags.

Tip #5: Listen to Others’ Input

If these signs are present and family members, friends, or others are expressing their concerns about your driving, avoid getting upset. Take this as an opportunity to evaluate your driving skills and get a professional opinion on whether or not you should continue to drive.

Safety should be everyone’s top priority while driving, no matter what their age. By following these tips, you are ensuring that you keep yourself and other road users out of harm’s way. Drive safely out there!
