San Francisco and California Financial Elder Abuse Attorneys: Financial Elder Abuse By Insurance Agents

ATTORNEY NEWSLETTER

How Insurance Agents May Financially Exploit Seniors

Unscrupulous insurance agents, financial advisors and trustees target vulnerable seniors for financial elder abuse. A recently reported California case[1] illustrates what can happen to unsuspecting elderly consumers.  According to a complaint filed by an elderly couple in Southern California, an independent insurance agent allegedly sold them an annuity after the couple gave the agent a blank check for what they understood to be a revised trust the agent was preparing.  According to allegations in the complaint, the agent used papers the couple provided to transfer $100,000 out of their bank account to purchase the annuity.  The agent allegedly earned a $9500 sales commission on the sale.  After the sale, the couple was left with only $14,000 in savings according to their complaint against the agent and the issuing carrier.  According to the Los Angeles Times, the couple won a jury verdict against the carrier for $3.1 million and the case is now on appeal.

Allegations in the case illustrate how an insurance agent or other financial advisor could potentially exploit an elderly couple. The San Francisco financial elder abuse lawyers at Evans Law Firm, Inc. represent clients harmed by insurance agents and carriers, financial advisors, caregivers, trustees and others who financially exploit seniors.
