The Problem with Travel Insurance
It’s a common complaint about Travel Insurance that insurers fail to make payments on claims that they deem insufficiently serious. This has included illness, death of a loved one and physical ailments. Sometimes it seems like anything short of a catastrophic injury risks being denied. This can be a serious problem for travelers with mental health issues, whose ailments can be sudden, debilitating, and almost entirely dismissed by insurers and businesses. This practice is starting to lead to more angry consumers, and we’ve spoken about it here .
Who This Affects
At first glance, buying travel insurance seems like a prudent decision for those with mental health conditions. If there’s a chance you may suffer a panic attack or an episode that prevents you from making your flight, being reimbursed could at least help soften the blow. But in fact, travel insurers are almost certain to dismiss the claim as insufficiently dire. A doctor can attest to a broken limb, but travel insurers feel like they are being asked to take their customers word when it comes to mental health issues.
